Creating Personal Websites at UNCG

A brief tutorial on setting up your web space at UNCG. Due to changes in our IT department, this feature has slowly been relegated to a quasi non-supported status. It took me over ten minutes to find the documentation, which included having to log into the support system and performing a seach just to find this documentation provided by ITS. The University lawyers now require this statement to appear on all pages found on a personal website (any website located under a “/~username” directory is considered personal):

‘The material located at this site is not endorsed, sponsored, or provided by or on behalf of The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.’

In addition, the old, easy to use script for automated creation of your personal webspace seems to be missing. Also missing in the directions are where you are supposed to login to create this webspace. (It is located on another help document “How to: Use Core FTP” but the server is unix.uncg.edu.)

Users are still limited to a 10 megabyte quota, which is quite paltry these days. I highly suggest using Google Pages instead with it’s easy to use layout system, 100 megabyte quota, and it should be included as part of your services when student accounts are moved over to GMail. Short of rewriting ITS’s documentation, please contact me for further support of personal pages at UNCG.
