This CD-ROM is a compilation of CDs presented at NCMEA, ATE, TMEA, and public schools systems. All efforts have been made to make sure this disc is up-to-date, but certain items may have been overlooked. Hopefully the use you will get out of this disc will make up for any encountered errors.

Frequently schools purchase computers and software for the purpose of integrating technology into their classrooms and administration or management tasks. Usually the computers and the software facilitate the instruction during rehearsals and classes and also allow better organization/presentation in the areas of budget, planning, assessment/grading, generation of reports, etc. The ultimate goal, however, of this equipment and software is to teach students not only how to utilize technology, but also integrate these resources into their practice and music study at home. Unfortunately, many students either do not have access to a specific kind of computer or are able to afford sophisticated software programs. Because multiple computers are rarely found in the music area, the technology presented in the classroom is available only during school hours and usable only in the music room, generally by one student at a time. Furthermore, the computer laboratories at school are used primarily for teaching classes and do not allow access to students who are studying music for that reason or because producing sounds disturb the other students.

Recent advances in computers have resulted in affordable machines with modest specifications. These budget computers are so powerful that owners possess an entire music studio capable of instruction, composition, recording, CD production, etc. Several commercial programs are available to accomplish these task, most are cost prohibitive to both students and teachers. Fortunately, several of these programs have “lite” versions that are more powerful than even the full featured software developed a few years ago.

The purpose of this presentation today is geared toward identifying and presenting examples of how teachers and students can access technology on a budget. Essentially, every item, software or website, suggested today and available on the CD ROM, is being distributed free, and certainly within everyone's budget. The presentation is organized into types of software or web sites that can be utilized on virtually any computer, anywhere. For that reason, the CD ROM contains both Windows and Macintosh versions, although some adjustment must be made for accessing the information from the CD Rom; virtually any user of any type of computer should be able to utilize these resources. Permission to utilize the software programs and the web sites has been granted, and this statement serves as permission for every participant to make multiple copies this CD ROM and distribute it to students.

Finally, the suggestions and ideas presented today are essentially points of departure, because on the World Wide Web, countless of programs and sites are available. Thus, another focus of today's presentation is to develop insight within each participant as to what is available for free or minimal cost, and to carry this information to their own students for utilization in their home or wherever they may have access to a computer.
